Facts and Questions

How successful is EVLT?

Published clinical studies show a 98% initial success rate with excellent long-term results.

Is there a risk from the laser?

No. Our patients are given laser glasses to protect their eyes as a precaution against accidental firing of laser energy outside the body.

What are the side effects of EVLT?

The side effects our patients have experienced are minimal and may include bruising on the inner thigh area, some soreness, and, in a small number of cases, numbness that passes quickly.

What happens to the blood flow in my leg after EVLT?

After treatment, the blood in the faulty veins will be diverted to the many normal veins in the leg.

Is sclerotherapy procedure painful?

Our patients feel slight “pricks” of a very fine needle, but our sclerotherapy solution is entirely painless. Most of our patients tolerate the treatments extremely well.

Are there any restrictions after sclerotherapy treatment?

We tell our patients to avoid high impact exercise for about a week, as well as heavy weight lifting. Also, there should be minimal exposure to the sun over the treated veins within the first 2 weeks in order to obtain the best results.

What happens to the vein to make it disappear after sclerotherapy ?

Our sclerotherapy solution causes slight irritation to the inner lining of the vein. This makes the vein stop functioning, blocking blood flow. Blood flow is diverted to healthy veins. The abnormal vein is then absorbed by the body over time.

Is sclerotherapy a cure for my vein problem?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for this inherited condition, but we can control its effects. Sclerotherapy allows us to clear the areas on your legs and then keep them clear. Because we can grow superficial veins continuously, this treatment offers the ability to maintain your appearance.

How much downtime is involved with IPL?

Slight to moderate pinkness of the skin is sometimes seen after the treatment. Brown spots treated may appear somewhat darker for a couple of weeks, and this is an expected response. Cosmetics may be applied immediately after treatment. Our patients tell us that any effects from treatment disappear within three days.

Do the areas return after IPL?
If sun exposure is a part of your lifestyle, then treatment at least annually is recommended.

I have rosacea. Is IPL a good treatment for my condition?

Definitely! However, it does require several treatments to reduce the overall redness of the skin once the vessels have cleared.

I am very dark-skinned. Can I be treated with IPL?

IPL treatments for hair removal can be done on any skin type. Facial rejuvenation however is done on light, untanned skin.

Which procedure is best: IPL or microdermabrasion?

Actually, the procedures accomplish different goals. IPL will reduce discoloration on the skin such as brown spots and spider veins (as well as reduce pore size and even the skin tone). Microdermabrasion gets rid of dead skin cells that tend to make the skin appear dull. A microdermabrasion treatment is an ideal way to prepare for an IPL treatment 2 weeks later, as we are able to get “closer” to the brown spot, spider veins because of the exfoliation. Microdermabrasion, however, is not recommended for patients with rosacea.

Does microdermabrasion hurt?

Microdermabrasion is a pleasant experience. A hand held wand passes over the skin which emits crystals that polish your skin while suction removes dead skin cells. It is gentle, and our patients tell us they feel relaxed and rejuvenated after the treatment.

Can I wear make up after microdermabrasion?

It is best if you let your skin go without make up if possible for the rest of the day. A soothing post-procedure moisturizer is applied.

How often should I do microdermabrasion treatments?

Every 2 to 4 weeks is recommended to achieve optimal exfoliation, but we encourage patients to do one treatment before beginning IPL.
